Continuing on from the success of our 5 best hens movies to watch (part 1), we’re here to finish it off with another collection of movies that might not have female friendship at the centre of its plot, but doesn’t require much attention to enjoy (you know, for when you’re nursing that hangover.)
27 DRESSES
In 2008, Katherine Heigl was a bridesmaid not once, not twice, but 27 TIMES. But that’s not really what the movie’s about: we follow Heigl as she watches her sister announce and plan her wedding with the man she’s secretly been in love with (who also conveniently happens to be her boss.) We’re not here for the drama – we’re here to rank the 27 dresses that range from the mildly absurd (that scuba ensemble) to the downright inappropriate (think LA wedding, but for Hugh Hefner). Oh, and we can’t resist a bit of James Marsden too.
MAMMA MIA
We’ll give you a minute to think of a greater chick flick than this. Can’t do it? We don’t blame you. Maybe it’s the stellar cast including Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan. Or it’s the can’t-get-out-of-our-heads sing-along songs. Whatever it is, this is a classic that’s perfect for a hens night. Come for the views of the Greek Islands, stay for the reveal. Just make sure you bring the tissues.
THE WEDDING DATE
So cringey it’s good, The Wedding Date stars Debra Messing, who hires a male escort (Dermot Mulroney) to pose as her date for a wedding. Lo and behold, she starts to fall for him – think a reverse ‘Pretty Woman’. However, this one gets a little more complicated than that. We won’t give too much away if you haven’t already seen this movie, but it’s definitely one for the girls (and may have your suspicions aroused.)
MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING
If you thought your wedding plans had big problems, think again. This box office sleeper hit comedy had all the elements you’d expect: crazy families, inappropriate translations, and culture clashes. Good-hearted, lovable and true to Nia Vardalos’ real life, this movie will leave you in stitches. It’s extra relatable if you’re marrying outside of your culture.
MY BEST FRIEND’S WEDDING
We’re pretty sure we’ve all got that childhood friend that we made a pact with when we were younger that if you were both single by the age of 28, you would marry each other. My Best Friend’s Wedding plays on just that, only it’s too late for Julia Roberts’ character, whose best friend announces that he’s found his ever-after… and it’s not her. We’re certain you’ve seen this 1997 classic, and if it’s been a long time between watches, add this to your list.
